The Best Preventive Maintenance Tips for Trucks

Check Fluids

This only takes a few minutes and is an easy way to avoid many major problems. Check your engine oil, coolant transmission, brake, power steering, and other underhood fluids regularly. If you see a drop in levels, check if it’s a leak or a consumption issue.

Change Fluids

How often you need to change fluids depends on how many miles you drive, the weight of the loads you haul, and the types of terrain you drive over. Always follow the recommendations of the manufacturer and don’t try to extend fluid life.

Check Tire Pressure

Make your tires last longer and wear evenly by regularly checking and ensuring that the tires are inflated to the recommended pressure. Tire wear can also reveal alignment and suspension issues.

Inspect Brakes

You always need to be sure that you can stop safely. Check your brakes often and replace them when they’re worn out. Also, ensure that they wear evenly side to side and front to back. If not, your brake system could be imbalanced and need adjustments.

Check Air Filters

Clean air filters can reduce fuel consumption by helping the engine run smoothly. A clean filter means more air for the engine, which means optimum fuel burning, and optimal power generation.

Test the Battery and Electrical System

Add your truck battery, alternator, and electrical system to your annual preventive maintenance checklist. Always check it before winter too.

Inspect the Clutch and Gearbox

Heavy loads and a high-torque engine put a lot of strain on the gearbox and clutch of your truck. So inspect it regularly to ensure that it’s functioning properly. Also, ensure that your clutch isn’t slipping as it will affect reliability and fuel economy.

Exterior Lighting

Walk around your truck with its exterior lights switched on to see if you have any burnt-out bulbs that need replacing. Ensure that all your running, brake, signal, and hazard lights are working properly and include these checks in your preventive maintenance too.

Service the Fifth Wheel Platform

If you can’t securely hook up your trailer, then the fifth wheel platform problems can slow you down or have you off the road. So inspect, clean, grease, and adjust the platform as required.
