SUV vs. Crossover: What Makes One Better Than the Other

Towing

SUVSs are preferred by adventurers and people who need to tow trailers or boats behind their vehicles. So, if you’re someone who loves going off-road, boating, camping, fishing, and other outdoor activities, you need a full-size SUV.

Fuel Economy

Crossovers are usually powered by small four-cylinder engines that have slightly lower performance capabilities but always offer better fuel economy compared to SUVs. Another advantage is that they are much lighter than SUVs and that also contributes to excellent fuel economy.

Ground Clearance

People prefer SUVs because of their higher ground clearance. This is something sedans can never offer. Crossovers also offer higher ground clearance than sedans, but SUVs are the undisputed winners in this category.

Affordability

Crossovers are easily more affordable than SUVs. And because there are so many crossovers in the market now, they’re all packed with features and priced competitively. Their unibody architecture also makes them cheaper to manufacture. In comparison, SUVs are more expensive as they offer much more power and utility as compared to crossovers.

Off-Road Capability

Several crossovers today offer all-wheel drive capabilities. But nothing beats proper SUVs in terms of real off-road performance. Full-size SUVs also have higher ground clearance and have low-range transmissions, differentials and underbody protection to keep them going where no other car can go.

Maneuverability

Because they’re built on stiffer car platforms and are lighter, crossovers are way more maneuverable than SUVs. They’re also easier to drive and are able to stop in shorter distances as compared to SUVs. Crossovers are also smaller than SUVs and have lower ground clearance which makes them better in tight urban conditions.

Power

SUVs are usually powered by turbocharged V6s or big V8s and easily have the upper hand in terms of power output. This also makes it easier for SUVs to haul cargo and tow heavy things uphill and downhill and traverse rugged terrain. There are even SUVs that offer sports car like acceleration and speeds but those are a rarity.

Transition

There’s no doubt that transitioning from regular cars to crossovers is much easier than the transition to SUVs. As crossovers are based on car platforms, they’re far easier to handle than SUVs which often feel like trucks.
